A stencil wiper is the consumable roll used by an SMT printer’s underside-cleaning system to remove solder paste and contamination from the stencil. The correct roll must physically fit the machine, advance reliably, work with the printer’s dry, vacuum, or wet-cleaning sequence, and avoid lint, tearing, solvent incompatibility, or premature saturation. Printer model alone is not enough because core, width, length, winding direction, vacuum openings, and process settings can differ. This guide gives process engineers and buyers a controlled way to specify, trial, inspect, and purchase stencil wiping rolls without relying on vague claims such as “universal” or “lint free.”
Start with the printer and existing approved roll
Record printer manufacturer and model, current roll part number, web width, roll length, core material, core inside diameter, overall outside diameter, winding direction, attachment method, and any vacuum interface. Measure an approved roll and compare it with the machine manual rather than relying only on a supplier cross-reference.
Confirm clearance at installation and through the full roll. A roll that initially fits may bind as it advances, telescope, wrinkle, fail to track, or trigger an end-of-roll condition incorrectly. Include loading and removal by normal operators in the trial.

Match the material to the cleaning sequence
Under-stencil cleaning may use dry wiping, vacuum, wetting, or combinations selected by the process owner. The web must transport the approved cleaning fluid where used, contact the stencil consistently, and release from the machine without tearing or leaving fibers.
Ask for the material construction and relevant consistency controls. “Nonwoven” describes a broad family, not a guaranteed process outcome. Absorbency, strength, thickness, surface texture, edge quality, roll tension, and cleanliness can influence wiping behavior. Validate the complete sequence with the actual paste, stencil, printer, and approved fluid.

Evaluate lint, debris and residue in the process
A supplier may describe a wiper as lint free, but the buyer still needs an observable acceptance method. Inspect edges, web surface, core dust, loose fibers, splices, wrinkles, contamination, and packaging. During the trial, examine the underside of the stencil, printer area, vacuum path, and printed boards for transferred debris.
Residue can come from paste, cleaning fluid, web material, packaging, or incorrect settings. Investigate the source before changing wipe frequency or applying more fluid. The IPC cleaning guidance emphasizes process control and cleanliness; a consumable cannot compensate for poor maintenance or an unsuitable cleaning chemistry.

Validate print results rather than only wipe appearance
The purpose of underside cleaning is stable printing, not simply a visually cleaner roll. Define trial observations such as aperture condition, paste smearing, underside contamination, web advance, vacuum behavior, alarms, operator intervention, and downstream print inspection. Use the site’s established process metrics where available.
Run enough cycles to observe normal loading and roll behavior. Compare against the approved baseline under controlled settings. Avoid promising a universal reduction in defects or cleaning frequency; paste, aperture design, environment, printer settings, board support, and maintenance all influence the result.
Control storage, installation and changeover
Keep rolls in their protective packaging until use and follow the approved storage conditions. Identify printer compatibility, supplier lot, receipt date, and status. Prevent the roll surface and core from contacting uncontrolled floors or benches during installation.
Write a changeover instruction that covers winding direction, attachment, web path, tension, vacuum setup, initial advance, and disposal. Train operators to stop and quarantine rolls with crushed cores, damaged edges, wrinkles, contamination, incorrect width, or inconsistent winding.

Run a controlled first-article trial
Use a documented sample that represents the proposed production construction. Compare it with the current approved item where one exists. Record identification, revision, supplier lot, environmental conditions, equipment, operators, and observations. A trial should cover receiving, storage, preparation, normal use, cleaning where applicable, and disposal or return. Stop the trial if the item damages a product, creates contamination, interferes with equipment, or conflicts with the ESD or safety procedure.
Separate pass criteria from observations. Dimensions, labeling, fit, workmanship, material evidence, and functional behavior may require different checks. Resolve deviations before approving production quantities, and retain the controlled drawing, report, and approval sample. Require supplier notification before a change to material source, additive, adhesive, construction, tooling, process, or critical dimension.
Incoming inspection and ongoing control
- Match the item, drawing revision, quantity, supplier lot, and packaging label to the order.
- Inspect for contamination, damage, poor workmanship, incorrect dimensions, and missing identification.
- Perform the agreed sampling and verification with a documented method and calibrated equipment where measurement is required.
- Quarantine unexplained changes in color, odor, texture, tack, fit, winding, geometry, or performance.
- Keep acceptance records and link complaints or failures to the affected lot.
- Review the specification when the product, equipment, route, cleaning method, or control plan changes.
RFQ checklist for buyers
State the application, protection boundary, equipment or part interface, dimensions and tolerances, material construction, required function, test method and acceptance criteria, cleanliness and workmanship requirements, packaging, labeling, traceability, sample quantity, first-article expectations, documentation, change notification, and delivery quantity. Compare samples under the same conditions
A useful comparison changes one decision at a time. Use the same representative parts, operators, equipment, route, cleaning preparation, and observation period for each candidate. Label samples so reviewers do not confuse supplier identity, revision, or test sequence. Where practical, include the currently approved item as a baseline. Record both successful behavior and the work needed to achieve it, such as extra adjustment, repeated cleaning, slower handling, or operator intervention.
Do not combine electrical, mechanical, cleanliness, and commercial conclusions into one vague score. A candidate may fit well but lack traceable material evidence, or have strong documentation but perform poorly in the machine. Keep separate pass criteria for safety, ESD control, product protection, equipment compatibility, contamination, usability, documentation, and lifecycle cost. Any hard failure should be resolved rather than hidden by a high average score.
Commercial comparison should use the cost of a completed and accepted process, not only price per piece. Include inspection effort, changeover time, waste, cleaning, replacement, downtime risk, return logistics, documentation, and the effect of inconsistent lots. These factors do not justify inventing a service-life claim; they help the buyer design a trial that measures the conditions that actually create cost.
